There are many different types of insurance available these days. In the realm of health insurance, two of the main types are individual and group. Individual is exactly what it sounds like -- a plan for one person. Group is a plan that encompasses many people. Many companies offer group health coverage for their employees. The reason group health insurance is often more affordable than individual health insurance is because there are so many contributors to the plan.

In addition, some group plans fall under categories like HMO, PPO and POS. These plans are often beneficial for companies in several ways. For example, HMO or health maintenance organization is a type of group plan that allows for substantial savings if policy holders choose healthcare providers within the designated group. There may also be limits and regulations regarding how many and/or what type of visits the policy holder can have which will be covered under the plan. PPO stands for preferred provider organization and is similar to an HMO in several ways.

PPOs are on average less restrictive than HMO plans. They do use a network of healthcare providers just like an HMO. If you see an in-network provider it will cost you much less than if you see an out-of-network provider. With a PPO, you can see a specialist without having to get a referral from your primary physician. POS stands for point of service and is also like an HMO in that you will need a referral from your primary care physician in order to see a specialist. On the subject of your primary care physician, there will be a number of choices available to you.

How many providers you have to choose from with your group health insurance Texas plan depends on several factors. The size of your local area is one factor. A big city is going to have more providers than a small town. The type of plan and who the insurance company is may also be a factor in how many providers are participating.
