Medical Disability Insurance Helps When You Get Hurt
![]() |
Medical disability insurance helps those with disabilities that are unable to work. These can be disabilities resulting from an on the job accident, or a condition with which one was born. In a general sense, a disability is the absence or significant restriction of an ability when compared to the average population. It has also been defined as a physical or mental handicap, especially one that prevents a person from living a normal life or holding a job. Medical disability insurance helps disabled personas by providing financial and medical assistance.
Problems covered by medical disability insurance can be physical as well as mental. Physical disabilities can include the loss of an extremity or entire limb, back injury, deafness, blindness, or a side effect of a serious illness. Medical disability insurance may also cover mental disabilities such as retardation, Down's syndrome, brain injury due to accident, and other non-recoverable conditions. There are many ways in which medical disability insurance assists disabled persons to live better lives.
A blind person may rely on medical disability insurance for many aspects of his life. It can pay for frequent doctor visits and medications. In-home nursing care may be required. Assistance for food, rent, and clothing might apply. Counseling and similar therapy can be helpful. A companion animal such as a seeing-eye dog may be assigned to the blind person. Medical disability insurance takes care of many facets of everyday life that sighted persons take for granted.
Medical disability insurance can help a person who has lost one or more limbs and can no longer function in her original job. It can help pay for hospital care, prescription medications, and long-term care such as nursing homes. Frequent physical therapy will likely be required. Assistant devices such as wheel chairs and handicapped-accessible modifications may be required in the person's home. Medical disability insurance can help raise the disabled person's standard of living as much as possible.
A disabled person who is no longer employable depends on medical disability insurance for his income. Many people take their income for granted, until they suddenly lose it. This problem is compounded by not being able to return to the workforce. Monthly income and stipends for everyday living can be part of medical disability insurance benefits.
The best time to buy medical disability insurance is when you don't need it! Once a disabling event occurs, few insurers will be likely to issue a policy. Even if a policy is issued, the monthly premiums can be outrageously high. Medical disability insurance generally costs very little, and is an important tool to have in your insurance portfolio.
